McDowell County is working to recover after the devastating wind and severe flooding from Tropical Storm Helene. This unprecedented storm has led to widespread road closures, cell service disruptions, and many people remain isolated in our mountain communities without power and water.
We are deeply thankful for the first responders working tirelessly for our communities and for the outpouring of support from across the country. The strength of community is clear as we come together to rescue and support those in need. While our Visitor Center has experienced significant damage, we are grateful that the Destination McDowell team is safe. The entire Destination McDowell Team has answered the call to our community; We are coordinating with local leaders, McDowell EMS, Sheriff's Office, Rescue and businesses. Whether it's to help with the rescue and recovery efforts, to sharing accurate, updated information for residents, workers, and visitors. Stay tuned for updates and additional resource links to be posted below.

Old Fort Help is the primary support page for Old Fort, NC. Old Fort is one of our hardest hit areas in McDowell County, and relief and recovery efforts are still active.
G5 Trail Collective is coordinating volunteer efforts throughout McDowell. Check out their "Volunteer" or "Donate links on their home page.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT self-deploy! Do not travel to impacted areas without coordinating with local and state officials. Half of all roads are blocked or broken. Note: Initial Reports of gas shortages were credible, but supply issues have been resolved throughout most of western NC.
Where Can I Travel?
The NCDOT has reported that I-40 from NC to TN is impassable. I-26 is closed at the Tennessee state line. Use DriveNC for updates: https://drivenc.gov/
However, much of I-40 has reopened. As more of the region reopens, we will work to update the map above with openings and closure/repair areas. Much of Marion, NC is open for business and encouraging visitors to come to their town.
