McDowell County is working to recover after the devastating wind and severe flooding from Tropical Storm Helene. This unprecedented storm has led to widespread road closures, cell service disruptions, and many people remain isolated in our mountain communities without power and water.
We are deeply thankful for the first responders working tirelessly for our communities and for the outpouring of support from across the country. The strength of community is clear as we come together to rescue and support those in need. While our Visitor Center has experienced significant damage, we are grateful that the Destination McDowell team is safe. The entire Destination McDowell Team has answered the call to our community; We are coordinating with local leaders, McDowell EMS, Sheriff's Office, Rescue and businesses. Whether it's to help with the rescue and recovery efforts, to sharing accurate, updated information for residents, workers, and visitors. Stay tuned for updates and additional resource links to be posted below.

Volunteers
Community members looking to assist with ongoing disaster relief efforts are crucial to helping our neighbors in need as they recover from the recent storm's devastating impact.
If you are available to volunteer, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator at (828) 559-9731 to learn about current opportunities and how you can contribute.
Roles may include:
- Assisting with the distribution of supplies
- Helping at shelters
- Supporting clean-up efforts
Your time and dedication are invaluable to our community during this challenging time.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT self-deploy! Do not travel to impacted areas without coordinating with local and state officials. Half of all roads are blocked or broken. You will likely run out of gas, and gas stations are empty in western NC.
The NCDOT has reported that I-40 is impassable in multiple locations. I-26 is closed at the Tennessee state line. There are many closed roads that are not listed on the NCDOT website as many areas are not able to report at this time. All roads in Western North Carolina should be considered closed and non-emergency travel is prohibited.
