The Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina contain multitudes which means it is a terrific destination for everyone in the family. In addition to what McDowell County is already well-known for (miles of trails and endless forests), there’s lots of fun and big adventures to be had by all ages at area attractions
Here are some ideas for great family activities for your next visit to McDowell County in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
1. Gem Mining
Take your crew to hunt for buried treasure at a local gem mine, where everyone is sure to walk away with a few treasures of their own. At Emerald Village, in magical Little Switzerland, your family can tour a historic mineral mine. Be sure to ask about the Blacklight Tours and then prospect for gems at the mining sluice.
The Lucky Strike Gold and Gem Mine in Marion is a former commercial mine, but is now a recreational mine offering mining, camping, retail shopping and the “Best Burgers in Town.” The family will love spending time here.
Nearby along the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 331, the Museum of North Carolina Minerals highlights the role of mining in the region’s history through hands-on exhibits.
2. Waterfall Hunting
The Western North Carolina mountains are home to over 300 waterfalls and luckily, there are several breathtaking falls in McDowell County that feature short, easy trails, ideal for families with young, eager explorers.
Check out the 80-foot wonder of Tom’s Creek Falls off US Hwy 221, and be sure to take a peek at the old mica mine along the side of its fairly short, easy trail.
Catawba Falls near Old Fort is another family favorite and iconic waterfall in this area. Bring snacks for the littles for this 2.7 mile out-and-back that leads to a 340-foot double waterfall!
Linville Falls is considered the “Grand Canyon of the East,” so you may want to put this on your “Must See” list. The Erwins View Trail is the most family-friendly, rated moderate in difficulty for its half-mile distance.
3. Indoor Fun & Games
Not every town has an old-school style skating rink, but Marion does! Marion Hot Wheelz skating rink is one block from Main Street, making it super convenient to explore downtown Marion, as well.
For kids who like comics, check out All Things Geeky By 2 Nerds. It’s not your average comic book store.
To include some history in your visit to McDowell County, the Historic Carson House is a step back in time. It's a fun and educational way to spend some quality time together.
A visit to the Mountain Gateway Museum will have your whole group imaging the pioneering days of old; be sure to see their ever-changing exhibits.
4. Above-Ground Views & Underground Adventures
The 100-year-old Historic Orchard at Altapass, located along the Blue Ridge Parkway, offers live music, dancing and storytelling on Saturdays and Sundays in the summer. You can also enjoy wandering through apple trees, lawn games and walking trails. The general store and the Apple Core Grill will make sure everyone is well-fed.
Linville Caverns is North Carolina’s only public caverns, so put it on the “Must See” list for sure. Located inside Humpback Mountain north of Marion, guided tours are offered year-round through active limestone formations and beside underground streams.
