Pitta dosha is composed of fire and water and governs digestion, metabolism, and energy transformation. People with high Pitta are typically sharp, focused, and athletic, but can become angry or overheated.
According to Ayurveda, a dosha is a biological energy type that shapes a person's physical, mental, and emotional health. Everyone has a unique combination of three main doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
Doshas are continually influenced by everything you do, eat, think, feel, and experience. Ayurveda teaches that health is about tending to the continual ebb and flow of these forces day to day. When the doshas remain proportionate to your natural constitution, you feel vitality, clarity, steadiness, and ease. When they are disturbed (by diet, environment, habits, emotion, or external events), the first signs are often subtle—changes in appetite, digestion, mood, energy, or sleep—but, if ignored, can evolve into deeper patterns of discomfort or disease.
In each session of the “Ayurveda in Practice Series,” we’ll spend the first hour learning about how the particular dosha gets disturbed and how to balance it. The second hour will be a guided gentle yoga practice connecting what we’ve learned about that dosha to yoga asana, pranayama and meditation.
