After weathering Hurricane Helene together, our mountain community is blooming again, and we can't wait to share it with you!

McDowell County has made progress in recovering from Hurricane Helene. While this unprecedented storm challenged our region, it also revealed the incredible resilience of our community. Today, we're thrilled to announce that most of our beloved businesses and attractions are ready to welcome you back with open arms!

The journey hasn't been easy, but the dedication of our first responders and volunteers and the overwhelming support from across the country have made all the difference. Our community has grown stronger through this experience, and many locals have inspiring stories of courage and kindness to share when you visit.

Current Status Update

Most attractions and businesses are now open and eager to welcome you! Please check individual websites and social media channels for the most current information, as more places continue to reopen.

Please note the following areas are temporarily unavailable:

  • Much of the Blue Ridge Parkway surrounding McDowell County is still under repair, though many areas are reopening. Great news! Little Switzerland is open and accessible via NC Hwy 226 (Gillespie Gap).
  • Curtis Creek Campground in Old Fort (remains closed)
  • Andrews Geyser in Old Fort (Park Open, Geyser temporarily offline)
  • Mt. Mitchell is now open and accessible via Asheville and the Folk Art Center exit (sections of route from McDowell remain closed; repair efforts continuing)
  • The Orchard at Altapass is accessible via the Blue Ridge Parkway and Hwy NC-226
