The Blue Ridge has long been associated with scenic beauty, mountain majesty, iconic outdoor adventure, and legendary driving routes. The Blue Ridge Parkway is often referred to as “America’s Favorite Drive” and for good reason. The drivability of these mountains offers immense flexibility for adventures, even those that take place from the comfort of a car. The incredible biodiversity of the flora and fauna is visible along the backroads, byways, and highways of these Appalachian Mountains. So, while sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway continue to be repaired, let’s look at a few of the other scenic drives in McDowell County and the wonderful adventures at the end of the road!
How to Drive to Lake James the Most Beautiful Way
- Start in Marion on Hwy 221 and drive to Hwy 221N. Then hop on Hankins Road, which will point you toward Lake James along its hilly, winding road and sweeping turns around the lake. A terrific spot to stop for the lake views is the Black Bear Access Area.
- Just down the road is Marina Drive, where you’ll find the Bear Creek Marina in Nebo, NC. Fresh seafood and a variety of comfort food options await. You may even catch some live music!
- Lake James State Park is a terrific place to hike, bike, boat, fish, kick back, and relax. Smells like vacation!
Where to Ride a Motorcycle in McDowell County
- Let’s face it – some rides are just better on a motorcycle. Here’s a route in McDowell County to get your bike engines revving.
- Car enthusiasts and motorcyclists will delight in the Diamondback, a 38-mile, diamond-shaped loop that begins in Little Switzerland, NC. The route takes you on NC 226A, US 221, Toms Creek Road, NC 80, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is a popular and thrilling ride, especially for bikers.
- The Switzerland Inn is an ideal spot to stay overnight. Book time in the spa to help you unwind from the high-intensity riding, or swap stories with fellow travelers in the restaurant and bar.
Where to Enjoy Roads Less Traveled
- An old unpaved road should not be discounted – it is an exceptionally mellow way to travel. Luckily, here in McDowell County, there are routes that help keep you in the slower lane, which is way better for sightseeing.
- A very special, but possibly not the most well-known to visitors, is the road to the Linville Gorge Wilderness, which runs from North Cove to Old NC 105. Highlights include multiple overlook opportunities and views of the Linville Gorge and the Table Rock Mountains. This is for sure a unique way to travel. Take your time and your higher-clearance vehicle.
- Another bonus of exploring this path is visiting Wiseman's View, located deep within the Linville Gorge in the Pisgah National Forest. In the afternoon light, the opposite side of the gorge is completely illuminated. A sunset stop here will leave you breathless, savoring the stunning panoramic views. The hike to the Wiseman's View overlook is short and accessible from the parking lot area. Don’t forget your camera!
