While on Mainstreet

Marion, NC, known locally as Mainstreet, offers numerous spots waiting to be discovered. Burrito Bros Mexican restaurant offered authentic cuisine, where everything is made from scratch. Head over to the Marion Wing Factory if you're in the mood for mouth-watering wings and house-made sides.

For evening entertainment with drinks and live local music, visit Spillway Bridge & Co. The High Dive is another popular spot, open Friday and Saturday nights, offering an adults-only, small mountain town bar atmosphere, one of the most authentic hangout spots locals love.

Need a spot of coffee or a spot to decompress? Ingenious Coffee Roasters offers locally roasted coffee, cozy tables, a complimentary cafe library you can borrow or donate to, and Ukulele weekends (Check their Facebook for a schedule).

Marion offers more than just food and drink. The Joseph McDowell Greenway provides a beautiful and accessible walk along the Catawba River. Bring a fishing pole if you want to blend in with locals! And don't miss the Marion Pickle Barrel, despite its curious name, this shop offers delightful boutique shopping and supports local artisans.

While at Basecamp

Old Fort, NC, referred to as Basecamp by locals, provides many ways to experience the area naturally. Point Lookout Trail is a beautiful hike you might not find on typical maps, offering scenic mountain views throughout the journey. Remember to bring plenty of water and watch for mountain bikers.

Want to break away from the crowds? Old Fort Picnic Area is tucked away off Old US-70, and is a great shady spot offering picnic shelters, access to Kitsuma Trail, and the musical sounds of nearby creeks.

No visit to Old Fort is complete without stopping at Hillman Beer, where you'll find not just excellent brews but also space for families and pets. It's consistently rated as one of the top hangout spots in the county.

While Visiting The Outpost

Little Switzerland, NC, the Outpost of McDowell County, resembles a charming Swiss village nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Little Switzerland Orchard, Cidery, Winery, and Brewery offers something for everyone.

This mountain-top destination even accommodates campers, making it easy to immerse yourself in the local experience.

Stroll Little Switzerland with it's unique cottage style road-side art, art barns, and unique coffee & book store, Little Switzerland Books & Beans.

Another great family excursion is the Historic Orchard at Altapass, which hosts seasonal events like Pipes on the Parkway, and offers "Heyride" tours of the orchard. Explore several hiking trails, a variety of heirloom apples, the general store, a mini cafe, and regular music performances.

While Thoughtfully Visiting The Gorge

Linville Falls, known as the Gorge, continues its recovery from the storm with establishments reopening to welcome visitors. Linville Caverns, the only public caverns in North Carolina, offer educational guided tours inside Humpback Mountain, showcasing natural wonders that inspire awe.

For accommodations, consider Linville Falls Lodge and Cottages. Their on-site restaurant, Spear's, serves excellent local cuisine with a full bar menu.

While Cruising The Blueway

Nebo, NC, sits along Lake James, affectionately called the Blueway. Mica Town Brewing -Nebo is a popular locally-owned spot offering craft brews and spirits where you can relax among residents.

Whippoorwill Farm, home to Fonta Flora Brewery, provides a perfect day out on its 9 acres of pasture land surrounded by Lake James.
