Where to Find Fall Color?

From late September through mid-October, we’ll see all shades of bold and bright orange, gold, and red sweeping across the highest elevations around Grandfather Mountain, Linville Falls, and Little Switzerland. Later in October, the fall color will reach the towns of Old Fort and Marion. And there will still be plenty of fall to enjoy, extending into early November, when the leaves change around Lake James, Lake Lure, and Chimney Rock. Tune into the weekly fall color forecasts and seasonal events in and around McDowell County right here.

Do not forget about Mt Mitchell, off of the Parkway — the highest peak in the Eastern U.S., which happens to be in McDowell County’s backyard. This portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway has recently reopened after being damaged by Hurricane Helene. This is a fantastic time of year to visit Mt. Mitchell State Park and take in a 360-degree view of the colors in the surrounding valleys, as if someone had used a paintbrush.
