Fall Mountain Biking in Old Fort: Where to Rent and Ride

fallmtb

Old Fort’s small mountain town setting and trails in Pisgah National Forest draw mountain bikers year-round. Come fall, the cool air and changing leaves make it especially tempting to join the riders you see wheeling through town. Even if you didn’t bring a bike, you can still get out for a ride. Here’s where to rent one in Old Fort, a few trails to try and how to prepare for cooler temperatures and shorter days.

  • Bike rentals are easy with WayOut Adventure Rentals. WayOut not only rents you the right bike for your riding adventures; they will also deliver the bike(s) to you!
  • Mountain Top Shuttles offers the helpful service of shuttling you from Old Fort to nearby upper mountain trailheads. Then, you get to ride downhill! Trails back down range from family-friendly paths to more rugged trails for advanced skill level riding.

From the Parkway, riders have multiple routes, both gravel and singletrack trails, to ride their way back into Old Fort. Meet up with your crew at Seeker Coffee, where you can catch the shuttle and fuel up for the ride!

  • At Foothills Watershed in Old Fort, a day on the bike can include plenty of time off it, too. The 117-acre bike park along the Catawba River welcomes riders of all skill levels, with an on-site brewery and barbecue for a break between rides. Check the calendar for live music and community events, or simply rent a bike and enjoy an afternoon outdoors.

Some Old Fort Trails to Try

Looking for an easygoing loop or a ride that puts your skills to work? Old Fort has options for both. Here are a few trails to get you started. Pick one that suits your experience, and leave yourself time to enjoy the scenery.

  • Heartbreak Ridge is a classic Pisgah National Forest trail for experienced mountain bikers. Rooty stretches, narrow passages and tight turns keep riders on their toes, while more open sections offer a change of pace. There’s plenty of fall color to enjoy, but stop for a look rather than taking your eyes off the trail.
  • For families and riders new to the sport, Old Fort’s Gateway Trail System offers beginner-friendly paths and loops. These gentler routes are a welcome find in the mountains and a good place to build confidence while enjoying a ride through the woods.
  • Intermediate riders looking for a challenge can try the Bernard Mountain Trail. Technical sections and rocky features give you plenty to work on, with views along the way providing a reason to pause and catch your breath.

Things to Know Before You Go

A warm fall afternoon can turn chilly in a hurry once the sun slips behind the mountains. Bring layers, especially if you’re riding at higher elevations, where mountain breezes can add to the chill.

Keep an eye on the clock, too. Fall’s shorter days leave less time for that “just one more” stretch of trail. Plan to finish before dark, and carry bike lights if your ride could extend past sunset.

Those colorful leaves can hide roots and rocks, so give the trail your attention. Rain can also leave muddy, slippery conditions. Check current trail conditions before heading out.

Bringing your own bike? If it needs a little attention before or after your ride, the Old Fort Bike Shop can help with repairs.

Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head into Old Fort for a hearty meal and a local beer. And if one day on the trails doesn’t feel like enough, explore these accommodations and stay awhile.
